Conservazione sostitutiva (also conservazione digitale a norma) is the Italian legal framework under which electronic documents, preserved according to AgID's rules with integrity guarantees, time stamps and signatures, hold the same legal force as paper originals. It is what allows Italian companies to destroy paper and rely on the digital archive, and it is mandatory territory for fiscal documents like electronic invoices.
Preservation itself is performed by accredited conservazione providers. The quality of what enters preservation, however, is decided upstream: documents must be classified, indexed and accompanied by correct structured metadata to be findable and legally useful for the following decade.
